Formerly the leader of the Volts gang in the Infinity Fortress, Amano Ginji is now a part of the GetBackers, a 2-man retrieval team with a 100% success rate. With his partner, Midou Ban, “Ban-chan” to Ginji, they get hired to get back precious items for a usually hefty fee, but since the team doesn’t have that much luck with money or their car, a supped-up VW Punch-Buggy known as the Ladybug, they’re either always broke or out a ride (since it usually gets towed). However, their favorite place to hang out (and where the receive most of their jobs), the Honky Tonk, is always open to them…even though they continuously run up their tab.
The Honky Tonk, as stated above, is where the GetBackers always hang out since it’s a café, run by a red-head named Paul. The first person that the GetBackers had helped, Natsumi, also works there to help them out whenever she can.
Ginji has a special power all his own (Ban is the same, but the power is different). Mostly referred to as an electric eel, Ginji stores electricity in his body and is literally quite a live wire. Ban, on the other hand, has a 200 kg grip and the Jagan (“Evil Eye”) which can cause someone to go into a nightmare-type dream for 1 minute.
At times when Ginji is close or in the Infinity Fortress, as well as very angry, he has a tendency to store the unlimited electricity that flows through the gigantic building. Doing so causes his previous entity as the leader of the Volts to slowly emerge, known as the Lightning Emperor (or Raitei). Ban is usually the one to calm his nerves as it has been said that Ban had originally beat Ginji in a fight back when he was the leader of the Volts.
Raitei (Japanese for “Lightning Emperor”, sorry, I use both words), is Ginji’s former self, and sometimes referred to as his alter ego. As stated before, Ban is really the only person that can keep Ginji from turning into him. Raitei usually only emerges after Ginji has stored a lot of electricity in his body as well as gotten really pissed off. There’s only one time in the actual anime he has reverted back into Raitei, and that’s during the first season where they had to go and retrieve I.L (pronounced “ill”) out of the Infinite Fortress.
The Infinite Fortress is where Amano Ginji grew up, and in the past, he was the leader of the Volts. With the help of his friends (known as the Four Kings), they tried to bring peace to the Lower town. Once Ban had entered, he had a fight with Ginji. No one really knows who won the fight; however, it’s clamed that Ban had won.
The Volts were a gang in Infinite Fortress comprised of Ginji (as the leader) and the Four Kings (Beast Master Shido, Thread Master Kazuki, MakubeX, and Masaki) to protect the inhabitants of the Lower Town of Infinite Fortress. Infinite Fortress is made up of 3 different sections: Babylon City, the Beltline, and Lower Town. People from the Beltline always came to Lower Town to technically beat the crap out of the inhabitants, and to put a stop to it, Ginji created the gang to help protect who was in Lower town. Not much is known about Babylon City or the Beltline as no one from Lower Town has made to either area; however, Kazuki had made it to Beltline, but retreated due to the inhabitants being too strong for just him alone.
Throughout the show, many types of “jobs” tend to pop up. Ban and Ginji are known as retrievers since they retrieve/get back what’s been lost. Others include transporters and protectors. These two job types tend to make it hard for the GetBackers as they still have to do their job. The most troublesome transporter is Kuroudo Akabane, a man who kills for fun. He’s attracted to the GetBacker team due to their strengths, and Ginji’s deathly afraid of him, causing him to run for his life or get really nervous whenever he is close. Not much is known about protectors as they’re only covered in about one or two episodes.
As stated before Ban and Ginji are retrievers, and there are actually 3 more known items that they’ve had to get back, the I.L (mentioned earlier), the arms of Venus, and MakubeX. Both retrievals of the I.L and MakubeX take place in the Infinite Fortress, and are the ending points of both first season (I.L) and second season (MakubeX).
When Ban and Ginji are asked to retrieve the I.L., they’re actually not alone. Beast Master Shido, Thread Master Kazuki, and two transporters (Kuroudo Akabane, and Himiko) are summoned as well to try to retrieve this item. It isn’t discovered until later that the I.L is actually an Implosion Lens (hence the initials I.L.), but this lens is actually being used by MakubeX (a former Four King and friend of Ginji) in attempt to get the Gods of Babylon City to acknowledge Lower Town. Through getting split up and almost lost (Ginji got lost the most), each one of the team has to fight someone else from Ginji’s past since the Infinite Fortress is more of Ginji’s “home”. Once they all meet up again, it’s off to fight MakubeX and get back the I.L.; however, with the use of Ban’s Jagan (“Evil Eye”), MakubeX doesn’t completely obliterate Lower Town and comes to realize that all he really wanted was to not be alone. So, they destroy the bomb that was made and get the information disk on the I.L. and try to take it back to the original people that had asked them to retrieve it. Of course, no one should have that type of information, so the disk ends up destroyed during a fight with the original owners, but the mission is still considered complete (since the GetBackers successfully retrieved the I.L.).
The arms of Venus was actually at the start of the second season. Seems the arms are the missing piece to the art piece Venus de Milo, and an artist doesn’t want the beauty of the original piece to be ruined by the re-discovered arms. So Ban and Ginji are hired to get the arms back. Of course, Shido isn’t far behind since he started a recovery service as well and he was hired to get back the actual art piece. This is where protectors are actually introduced since the owner of the arms didn’t want them taken, and our good old transporter (hired to transport the arms to the artwork), Kuroudo Akabane, is there as well. The battle takes place on a boat and considerably hidden island (only way on and off is by boat), and both items are retrieved; however, when the two retriever teams end up on one boat to get back to town to give the customer the items, their boat is shot and losing gas. So they have to lose weight to get back to town safely. Leave it to Ginji…he tosses the arms off the boat to lighten the weight. Of course, they have to explain this to their customer, and even though it seems like they had failed (tarnishing their 100% retrieval rate) they actually succeeded. Confused? They did what the customer originally wanted, to keep the Venus de Milo the way it was originally.
The third, and final, main retrieval mission was to get back MakubeX. It wasn’t found out until the middle of this arc that MakubeX is actually a computer program and hologram. Just like the previous battle in the Infinite Fortress, there are more fights from past friends (unfortunately, not much is revealed about them), and MakubeX’s data is actually backed up on a different computer as they destroy the original data. Once the original data is destroyed, they reboot MakubeX’s data so he can resume protecting the Lower Town in Ginji’s absence.

Usually a happy-go-lucky guy, naive, optimistic, and is a real softy when it comes to helping people. He tends to whine and mope sometimes (when he doesn’t get his way), yet is usually bouncy…either emotion causes him to sometimes shrink (turn chibi) and look like a tare-panda plushie. He also gets lost very easily. When the time does call for it, he will become very serious and sometimes close to recalling his alter ego (Raitei); however, Ban has told him never to do it (and when he does, it results in a decent hit to the head)
